Baron Hold sprang up in the midlands opportunistically, in the absence of a Weyr to support. They swiftly became lush and wealthy off of their access to valuable ores, and became known for their refined blacksmithing and production of everything from basic tools to exotic weaponry. Said exotic weaponry was especially needed as the ravagers began to populate the midland jungles. After a show of force from Tazum Weyr toppled one of their towers, they used the wreckage to build cyclopean walls around the main Hold, tucked away within its fields. These walls can't keep out dragons but they have kept the Hold safe from ravagers, so far.
