cleaning house/the basics
1. You don't have to have read the Pern books to join. I do recommend reading Dragonflight, because it's short (and great) and will give you the general idea, but you can also just read up on the lore and the norms and pick up vocab from reading other threads. If you mess something up that conflicts with canon (like your character shows up on a motorcycle), prepare to be politely corrected.
2. If you're a huge Pern geek, keep in mind that many of us haven't read the books in a while, nobody is a walking Pernese textbook, some people are entirely new to the universe, and so don't be an anal jerk or expect this site to perfectly replicate the mood or content of the books.
3. Before you rp, you need to create your OOC account. Character creation, plotting, basic discussion, and anything that is not a direct rp post should be done through this account.
3. Before you rp, you have to create a character. Your character needs to be accepted by admin before you can rp. Before you create a character you should brush up on the story and norms, and I recommend you check out the plotting boards to see what types of characters are needed, and to see if you can fill any character holes or plot requests made by other people. Make sure to check and fill in your face claim if you're using one.
4. You can have as many characters as you want. I just ask that you keep track of them (maybe put a list in your signature), and if that character is needed for an important position (i.e. a Lord Holder), don't create them and then just blank on their posts. If you blank too hard that character might mysteriously lose their position.
misc
1. Don't be a sexist racist homophobic transphobic dick c'mon you should all know this by now.
2. Proper grammar and punctuation in actual rp posts plz.
3. No powerplaying (controlling other people's characters) or godmoding (controlling the environment to your advantage, or making your character impossible to lay a finger one) unless it's something you and your rp partners have agreed to do. Y'all should know how this works.
4. No explicit boning because that will get the site shut down.
5. If you're dealing with triggering subjects or explicit violence or the like, put up a trigger warning in the title or beginning of the first post of a thread. ex: Bobby and Susie hang out (cw: animal abuse). Idfk.
in rp
1. We deviate from canon colors, sexes, and gender-based Impression, but as a result of in-world events that are based in canon. In other words, you can theoretically have a boy Impress a Queen dragon, or a girl Impress a Brown, but these are atypical incidents and so these characters are likely to face confusion and discrimination for bucking tradition.
2. In the same vein, characters who are trans or nonbinary are welcome, but are also likely to face discrimination and confusion from other characters.
3. Hatchings, Impression, clutch size, and survival rate of candidates and eggs will be determined through a system of random number generators in order to ensure fairness. This doesn't mean that the choices are taken entirely out of the hands of the people playing the candidates or Queen rider, or that Hatchings will be just a list of 'here you get this dragon here you get this one', it just means that the people involved in roleplaying the Hatchings will be provided with a list of probabilities and possible results (ex: '10 of 30 eggs will hatch, 3 will be bleached, 2 will be piebald, 5 will be solid colored, there will be no Queen, 3 non-NPC candidates will be injured.' This information will be PM'd to the person running the Hatching, who will then rp the Hatching within the confines of that list. This is necessary to prevent Hatchings that deviate from canon events (ex: a fully solid-colored Hatching would not be possible), to prevent favoritism, and to ensure that certain canon events do occur (ex: candidate injury).
I recognize this sounds complicated, but if there are problems with this system, we will all work together to fix it. If you become belligerent and refuse to cooperate altogether, the whole Hatching might have to be scrapped or taken over by an admin. Don't be that person.
4. Other events may be determined by random number generators. Ex: someone challenges someone else to a duel. The random number generator will determine who wins. This will apply to fights between Ravager leaders, members of the Weyr, Hold leaders, etc. Basically any fight that will rearrange significant control.*
*This does NOT apply if the events and their results have previously been plotted out. ex: User 1 plays a Hold leader, User 2 plays a Hold leader, Users 1 and 2 go 'hey wouldn't it be cool if they fought dramatically and then X died and Y took over their Hold?? Let's do that!!'
A lot of this will occur on a case by case basis. We prefer that people roleplay their winner-loser events fairly, in the spirit of having a good rp, NOT in the spirit of being winner winner chicken dinner. Police yourself and we won't have to bring out the random number generators.
If you're confused about anything or have a suggestion, feel free to PM an admin, or just post in the questions/feedback board.
