name: Joa
sex: male
age: late 30s bordering on 40
faceclaim: Jon Bernthal
group: His own
rank & duties: Leader, leads shit, decides who they're going to raid, organizes raids, organizes distribution of goods & responsibilities/rank of group members, upholds his Code among his people
basic appearance: Shaved head and face typically. Tall, militaristic, big-chested, intimidating in just the way he stands. Good posture. Poker faced unto death. Very, very rare to get even a half of a smile out of him. Not bad looking but he definitely looks like he's been punched in the face a lot. Many scars from fighting.
primary personality traits: He's a good leader. That's kind of his thing. He remembers being booted around and treated as nothing as a child, and he's hung his heart on the idea that every human being deserves a baseline of respect and of freedom. That's why he chose to become a ravager. Take what you can, protect what's yours, protect your people, create your family, and stick to your word. His word is bond. He's idealistic to a fault, but in an unusual way. He follows his personal code to the letter. You wouldn't think that a strict moral code would allow for robbery and brutalization, but it all fits into his scheme of how the world works and what's necessary to survive. He does what's necessary. He recognizes that he's responsible for his own life, and only him, because no one in his childhood cared about his life, he never had a lover or a child to care for. He is alone. Not in a bitter, sad way - it's just a fact. And he refuses to put his life in the hands of another.
Kind to runnerbeasts. I think he gets a kick out of giving kindness to something that doesn't expect it, and that doesn't greedily want it. Good hunter. Moves as silently like a cat. He doesn't have any romantic entanglements, I think he might be asexual, or at least just very apathetic.
relevant history: Grew up as a drudge of a servant in a Hold (idk which one). He wasn't abused more than anyone else (maybe got a lash or two a few times, a kick in the ass, some verbal abuse, etc) but he had shitty duties and just kind of a crap life. For a long time as a kid he dreamed of becoming a dragonrider. Whenever a rider would come on Search for candidates for a hatching, his heart would leap and he would be half-convinced that they would choose him. Other drudges and his masters mocked him for hoping, but he had a feeling, a kind of internal knowledge, that he was meant for more than drudgery. But he grew older and aged out of the window of candidacy. (part of this was probably due to the chaos of the Weyrs - I feel like he would have been picked if it hadn't been for that) That was his first taste of bitterness against the Weyrs.
As he grew, he found himself in a position of leadership, replacing the masters that had kicked and chastised him. As a young man, and a strong one, he was now the one tasked with booting and controlling the smaller, menial workers. He wasn't cruel but even without being cruel, he found he had no taste for it. He had no taste for that kind of unearned power. He didn't go out of his way to be kind, or change the world he lived in, or cause a revolution, but he recognized that it was not his world. He was not meant to control people who had no choice.
When everything else began to go to shit in the Weyrs, and chaos reached the Holds, he did what many early ravagers did. He left. At first he cared only for himself, foraging and stealing and making his way in the world. Gradually he accrued a following. And that's where he finally found himself - a leader of free men and women. None of them were forced to follow. They followed him of their own free will, because he was in their best interests, because he did have that special something he had suspected in himself as a child. He was not kind, but he was fair. His rules were at times draconian, but they were clear, and he enforced them, and never stepped outside of their bounds. His people knew exactly what to expect from him. And that's how he found himself a 'ravager lord', not by his intentions, but because of his absolute capacity for being one.
relevant views on current events: No sympathy for the Holds or the Weyr - their war is not his. His focus is on survival and the survival of his people. Thinks in a vague, abstract, not-worrying-about-it way that the Weyrs & Holds are an unsustainable system on the verge of collapse, which is why he's gotten out and why so many people are fleeing.
ambitions: He's pretty happy where he's at.
