Khania was not the daughter her father wanted. The first (and only) girl after four boys, Khania should have been spoiled rotten. Instead she was ignored, bullied, punished more harshly than her brothers, and frequently lectured on the kind of good girl and political tool she was supposed to grow up to be. When she didn’t live up to her parents’ expectations, she was beaten and abused. It only got worse when she hit puberty and didn’t become a “full figured beauty.”
Her brothers, particularly the youngest of the four, do love her. They tried to mitigate the horrors, but there was only so much they could do without falling out of their father’s good graces. In the end, the youngest brother and the hold harper (who was not-so-secretly in love with Khania) helped her escape the hold.
If her family asks, Khania will tell them she was kidnapped. She’s supposed to marry and have children and further her father’s goals. That’s what a well-behaved daughter does.
