He's old enough to have witnessed the drastic change from the populated, friendly Weyrs to the bleached, desiccated, and brutal Weyr that rules today. His brother inherited the lordship on their father's death and promptly shut the doors to the Weyr and refused to send any tithe. That didn't go well. S'ris's people promptly tore the Hold a new one, bringing in the terrifying force of an entire Wing with an enormous Bronze at its head to ask politely where their goods were. Baron Hold gave up the battle before it had begun. Soon after that, the Lord's people began to accuse him of weakness. Ravagers proved the point by raiding the Hold and killing seven people, including the Lord himself. Sellen stepped up for probably the first time in his life. He efficiently stamped out the raiders, instated himself as Lord holder, and got things up and running without spilling his klah.
relevant views on current events: Thinks the Weyrleader is a twat. Understands their issues and wants to support the Weyr, but doesn't agree with their policy of 'hey we're just going to show up at random and take your children and maybe they'll come back who knows'. But he's also pretty preoccupied with keeping the ravagers off his people's backs.
