name: Hydaja
sex: female
age: late 40s
dragon name: Soforith
dragon color: Golden, solid
dragon personality:
Soforith was young when she rose to mate, and hotblooded. She gave a merry chase for the bronzes of her first flight, but it seemed inevitable that S'ris's bronze Urmath would take her and sire her first clutch, probably from the seamless psychic connection Soforith shared with her rider, who had allied herself so intently with S'ris. Age has tempered her impulsive nature, and she's far less quick to anger than her bonded mate. There's a sorrow to her, having laid seven clutched and watched so few of her offspring even survive, and the other dragons are gentle with her. She swings between melancholy and good humor, and when in fine spirits she's known for a wry sense of humor that manifests itself in jokes or pranks at others' expense. Nothing vicious, but perhaps humbling.
faceclaim: Sade Adu
basic appearance:
Not gonna waste a lot of time on this since she has a faceclaim, but basic deets are:
brown skin, straight black hair, slanted cat-like brown eyes. 5'11", roughly 160 lbs, she's slender and typically proud in her carriage. Sharp features, but not gaunt; more like a well-honed blade. Resting expression makes her look knowing, as if she's peering into your mind and can see what you're thinking. And maybe she can. Much sleeker and more classically beautiful than her Weyrmate.
primary personality traits:
- Fiercely loyal to S'ris and his vision, has been since the get-go, but has doubts/regrets. There's affection, and love, and Hydaja treasures the private moments they have together where they aren't focused on the survival of the Weyr.
- Jumping off that, in their youth they were wholly committed to begetting, as tradition mandated and as their held beliefs demanded. Age has tempered this. Age, and loss.
- Grieves the loss of so many eggs, and so many children, which has affected her and Soforith equally. Is prone to occasional bouts of confusion and longing for a memory of better days.
- PTSD from murders she committed, somewhat regrets actions against Thomos Weyr. Doesn't dare voice them in public for fear of undermining everything she and S'ris have built, but talks of this to her Weyrmate when it occurs.
- Bears the heavy burden of Queen-mother with wavering determination; it's easy to be full of vim and vigor, fire and brimstone, in the dawning years of your leadership, but watching clutch after clutch in some measure fail, and suffering no small number of miscarriages and dead children herself, has taken a toll on the Weyrwoman. After her last miscarriage, she swore she'd not bear another child, and has flown to the between whenever she's felt herself quickening.
- Incredibly fair, to a fault. She's judicious and scant few have any qualms with her decisions. It takes careful machination so that others cannot take advantage of this (the question of 'who would?' always flies through her mind, but one cannot be too careful, especially given the nature of her Weyrmate's rise to leadership and their exclusive relationship.)
- Just as decisive as her Weyrmate, but less quick to take action, more inclined to listen and watch. In private, S'ris consults her for her thoughts, observations, and criticism. They are very conscious of their image, and the importance of their duties.
- Has grown to see the younger denizens of the Weyr in a sort of motherly light, especially for those whose dragons were hatched by Soforith. Is kind of everyone's mother.
relevant history:
Everything in the storyline is relevant. Go ahead and consult S'ris's application for more information.
As far as more personal history goes, Hydaja was born outside the Weyr in one of the handful of Holds still extant. She was a bastard daughter of one of the Lords, and was permitted a place (albeit lesser) in the noble family despite her illegitimate status. She came to the attention of the Dragonsearch with her mulish ways and latent psychic talent (nothing major, but she resented her family and the shame and indignity she was subjected to every day, and every now and then something 'bad' would happen to her half siblings, or their mother, or even her father) and was swept away to Tazum Weyr on what she viewed as wings of freedom and wings of terror. A chance to start over, but in unknown of the feared dragon Weyr. Bonding with Soforith was the gift of a lifetime, and the moment dragons became so viscerally important to her was the moment she became committed to the vital import of their survival.
In S'ris, she saw the future.
When she and S'ris took over the Weyr, it was a extremely joint effort. Hydaja believed fully in S'ris's concerns and vision, and backed him in all things with an iron fist and the full might of a powerful psychic Weyrwoman and her golden Queen. Hydaja had the surety off knowing that leading the Weyr was her destiny. Soforith was the only surviving Queen of the generation at the time, and Hydaja by default could be nothing but crucial to whatever direction Tazum Weyr took in response to what could be termed as one of the greatest crises Pern had ever known. She consciously chose S'ris as her Weyrmate, and influenced Soforith's choice in which bronze dragon to fly with, and sealed the fate of Thomos Weyr in one fell swoop.
She and S'ris have several living children: at least two adult sons, at least two other adult children, and one or two younger children that managed to survive the pregnancy and infancy.
relevant views on current events:
- Supports S'ris on subjugating the Holds, especially as she's been taught all the old tales and had it emphasized to her the importance of the survival of the Weyr
- Questions if the murders she/they committed were worth the pain, and if the isolation was worth the violation.
- Is looking more and more to her biological children and their futures/success.
ambitions:
- Number one goal is the survival of the Weyr and the species.
other:
If S'ris dies before she does, she'll probably want to follow him. Without him, it's hard for her to keep sight of his vision, and she fears that she would succumb to the madness of guilt and grief otherwise. Soforith is on her last clutch, and there are two Junior Queens who, while inferior, could potentially replace her as the mother of all dragons. It's a hard thought to bear, and it's a very private struggle of hers that she hasn't even shared with S'ris himself. She doesn't have any idea if he can guess her thoughts on this, and doesn't want to ask. There's a part of her that wishes she was dead, but she refuses to give up on her Weyr and potentially doom them to extinction when every last clutch makes all the difference.
